Prof David Galloway
Design Dissected: Is the design real?

Our presenter on this occasion is our President, Prof David Galloway. David is a Scottish surgeon who trained in Glasgow, London, and New York. He conducted original research into the causes and cellular mechanisms of some common cancers and developed a specialist practice in their surgical treatment. He was a Consultant Surgeon in Glasgow and a former President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow. He is also a Fellow of numerous international medical and surgical colleges and has held academic appointments in Glasgow, Kuala Lumpur, and Hong Kong.
Prof Galloway’s topic, Design Dissected *, is the subject of his recent book with the same title. He will bring a clinician’s perspective on the evidence for design in living things. He will explore some of the amazing integrated systems that exist in human physiology, such as the critical processes that must be successfully navigated at the time of birth for each of us to have any prospect of survival. His presentation will provide a powerful challenge to the belief that the universe, life, and conscious experience results from unguided natural processes.
Prof Peter Imming

Since 2004, Prof Imming has been Professor of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany). His research presently focusses on designing, synthesising, and testing anti-mycobacterial compounds and on anti-infective medicinal plants from Sub-Saharan Africa (https://trisustain.uni-halle.de/).
In addition, he is interested in origin of life research because it has an impact on worldview, his own view being based on the premise of a Creator.
How life on earth first began remains one of the most basic, interesting, and difficult questions to answer, and there are numerous experimental and modelling studies on the subject. Prof Imming’s talk surveyed various approaches to what is ultimately an unobservable event. Some chemical processes and scenarios are amenable to experimental and theoretical testing, in contrast to large organismal transitions in biology. Recently some non-reductionist, non-theistic philosophies have been proposed in origin of life explanations. Is there currently a credible path leading from pre-life mixtures of chemicals to the first cellular organism?
Prof Imming's presentation is extremely accessible to a wide range of disciplines - he is at pains to ensure that non-chemists engaging with the subject matter are not in any way excluded.

This webinar, held on Monday January 17th 2022 was, in retrospect, a stimulating evening in which our President, Prof David Galloway, engaged with Prof John Lennox in conversation about his life and work, and discussed some of the issues in faith and science that Prof Lennox has explored over the last few decades.
John C. Lennox, MA PhD DPhil DSc, is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at the University of Oxford, and Emeritus Fellow in the Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College. He is one of the best-known contributors to the current science-faith debate. He has been in high demand internationally for lectures and debates and has debated such well known figures as Prof Richard Dawkins and the late Christopher Hitchens. He is the author of a series of stimulating books, including God’s Undertaker – has Science buried God? (Lion Hudson 2009) and his most recent Cosmic Chemistry – Do God and Science Mix? (Lion 2021) in which he focuses on evolutionary theory, the origins of life and the universe, and ideas about mind and consciousness. John is one of the most able and best-known Christian apologists of our time and we are delighted to have him in our webinar series.

Return of the God Hypothesis

The first webinar of the series was held on Monday November 15th at 7.30pm (London time) with philosopher of science Dr Stephen Meyer, Director of the Centre for Science and Culture at the Discovery Institute, Seattle, USA, and one of the key figures in the development of the modern Intelligent Design movement. To his two best-selling and widely praised books, Signature in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt, Dr Meyer has now added a third ground-breaking volume, Return of the God Hypothesis.
In this webinar Dr Meyer addresses the question of whether modern science has proved that God is a delusion, and if it is it still rational to believe in God in the 21st century. He discussed a series of revolutionary scientific discoveries that point to the reality of God. Known for his innovative work on the evidence for intelligent design in biology, Meyer demonstrates how discoveries in astronomy and physics, as well as in biology, help to establish the identity of the ‘intelligent designer’ responsible for life.
Dr Meyer argued that a traditional theistic worldview, with its affirmation of a transcendent and personal God, best explains the evidence we have about the origin of life and the universe. You can hear him explain why it is an exciting time to be a scientist and a person of faith. Previously Meyer refrained from attempting to answer questions about ‘who’ might have designed life. Now he provides an evidence-based answer to arguably the ultimate mystery of the universe. In so doing, he draws a stunning conclusion: the data support not just the existence of an intelligent designer of some kind — but the existence of a personal God.
Prof Michael Egnor
The Evidence for Dualism in Neuroscience

The second webinar in the series was held on Monday, December 13th, at 7.30pm (London time) with Prof Michael Egnor, Professor of Neurosurgery and Paediatrics, State University of New York, Stony Brook, and a Senior Fellow of the Discovery Institute, Seattle. He is an award-winning brain surgeon and was named one of New York’s best doctors by the New York Magazine in 2005. He received his medical education at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed his residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His research on hydrocephalus has been published in journals including Journal of Neurosurgery, Paediatrics, and Cerebrospinal Fluid Research. He is on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Hydrocephalus Association in the United States and has lectured extensively throughout the United States and Europe.
Prof Egnor has written and spoken extensively about various aspects of science and metaphysics, and particularly about neuroscience and the philosophy of the mind. He has also debated with sceptics and atheists on these matters and also about aspects of Darwinian evolution and the existence of God.
In this webinar, Prof Egnor presents a fascinating tour taking the viewer from the early philosophical categories of Plato and Aristotle amongst others and up to the present position calling upon wide-ranging data from modern empirical clinical and laboratory neuroscience.
